George Trautman worked at the convention bureau of the Columbus, Ohio chamber of commerce in 1933. Branch Rickey recruited Trautman to professional baseball as president of the Columbus baseball club. Three years later, Trautman became president of the American Association. In 1946, Trautman spent the season as general manager of the Detroit Tigers. And, in 1947, Trautman became head of the National Association.
As Trautman started work in 1947, he said, “I can’t keep from feeling that if minor league baseball is good in 300 communities it ought to be good in 1,000.”
